David Hawk, a self-employed driver/trainer of standardbred race horses, passed away June 27, 2013, at OSU Medical Center. He was born January 23, 1963, in Newark, to Lloyd E. and Mary K. (Smith) Hawk. ... In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sons, Andrew J. Hawk of Grove City, Alexander D. Hawk of Grove City and Ethan Paul Hawk of Newark; step-son, Jaden Crawford of Newark; significant other, Richenda Newland of Newark; sisters, Cathi (David Barrett) Inman of Nashport and Mindy (David) Maines of Heath; nephew, Dylan Maines of Heath; several aunts, uncles and cousins, and special dogs, Gracie and Zeuss. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark


Brooks Sayre, 90, of Pomeroy, passed away suddenly Saturday, April 27, 2013. Brooks began training horses in 1976 and began driving the following year. He won his first race driving Salem Spook at the Proctorville, Ohio Fair on July 27, 1977. He continued training and driving until his retirement in 2007. As a driver, he had 967 lifetime starts with 152 wins with $234, 171 winnings with his best in 1982 with 82 (38-13-13) $68,271 and UTRS of .576. In that year he finished 2nd by a half length in the OSS $100,400 Final for Two Year Old Filly Trotters at Northfield with L.E. Townson 2, 2:05.3 f. Additional outstanding horses that Brooks raced for his sister Wilma Styer, brothers Paul and Howard Sayre, and others were My Lady Escort p, 4, 2:00.1f, Terrescort p, 4, 1:57.2f, My Good Lady p, 3, 1:53f, Camescort p, 3, 2:00.4h, My Ladys Pocket p, 5, 1:56.3f, My Good Sam p, 2, 1:57h and El Townson 4, 2:02.1f winner of $120,625. He is survived by his bride of 70 years, June, daughter Paula (Jack) Welker and son Roger (Christine) Sayre, three grandchildren: Don (Amy) Swatzel, Philip (Liz) Swatzel and Steve (Tara) Swatzel. Seven great-grandchildren also survive. Viewing will be on Tuesday, April 30, at the Cremeens Funeral Home, 823 Elm Street, Racine, Ohio (Meigs County) from 6 to 8 p.m. His funeral will be held at the same location on Wednesday, May 1, at 2:00 p.m.
